5 Scams to Avoid at Cancún Airport (2026)
Welcome to Cancún! As a local, I want your first 30 minutes in my city to be stress-free. Unfortunately, the airport is where most tourists get “burned” before their vacation even starts.
Here are the top 5 scams and how to avoid them:
1. The “Timeshare Gauntlet” (The Shark Tank)
After you clear customs and before you reach the exit, you’ll walk through a hallway filled with people in official-looking uniforms. They will offer you “Free Maps,” “Free Shuttles,” or “Information.” The Truth: They are timeshare salespeople. If you stop, you’ll be stuck for 20 minutes and pressured into a “presentation.” How to avoid: Keep walking. Don’t make eye contact. Head straight for the exit doors.
2. The “Broken Meter” Taxi
Taxis in Cancún do NOT use meters. If a driver tells you the meter is broken, they are setting you up to overcharge you at the destination. How to avoid: Always agree on the price BEFORE you put your luggage in the car. Better yet, pre-book a private shuttle.
3. The “Wrong Terminal” Trick
Some unscrupulous drivers might tell you that your airline has moved to a different terminal and offer to drive you there for a high fee. How to avoid: Check your flight status on the official airport app or website. Terminals rarely change last minute.
4. The Currency Exchange Trap
The exchange rates at the airport booths are notoriously bad (sometimes 20-30% worse than downtown). How to avoid: Use a bank ATM inside the airport if you need cash immediately, or wait until you get to a Chedraui or Walmart downtown.
5. The “Unlicensed Shuttle”
People will approach you outside saying they are your “pre-booked” shuttle. How to avoid: Look for your name on a sign. Licensed companies have specific parking spots and official IDs. Never follow someone who doesn’t have your booking details.
Stay safe and enjoy paradise!
