Cancún Transportation: How to Move Like a Local
Cancún Transportation Guide
You don’t need to rent a car to enjoy Cancún. In fact, for most people, it’s more stress than it’s worth. Here is how we locals move around.
1. The R-1 and R-2 Buses
These are the lifeblood of the city. They run 24/7 between the Hotel Zone and Downtown.
- Cost: $12 MXN (about $0.70 USD).
- Tip: Always have small change. They don’t give change for large bills.
- Route: R-1 goes to the ADO bus station and Puerto Juarez. R-2 goes to Walmart and Market 28.
2. Uber vs. Taxis
Uber is now legal and widely available in Cancún, but there is still tension with the taxi union.
- Uber: Safer because of GPS tracking and fixed prices in the app.
- Taxis: Faster to find but you MUST negotiate the price before getting in.
- Local Tip: If you take an Uber, it’s often better to meet them a block away from major taxi stands to avoid “drama.”
3. Colectivos (Shared Vans)
If you are traveling to Playa del Carmen or Tulum, the Colectivos are the cheapest way.
- Location: Behind the ADO bus station downtown.
- Cost: ~$45 MXN to Playa del Carmen.
4. The ADO Bus
For long distances (Airport, Playa, Tulum, Chichen Itza), the ADO is world-class. Clean, safe, and air-conditioned.
Save your money for margaritas, not expensive car rentals!
